On the latest acquisition
The work first hung in the exhibition “Paper Forms” at the Wassermühle Trittau, from a truss below the ceiling, and it changed slowly over the six weeks it was shown. The rope stretches, the stone sinks, and what looked taut on the first day was almost resting on the floor by the end.
That state is exactly what convinced the acquisitions committee. A sculpture that brings its own time with it, and does not hide it, is still the exception in this collection. Most works are finished when they arrive. This one is not.
For the depot that means extra work: the rope is measured again before every presentation and the suspension point documented. The artist supplied a protocol that records how much slack still belongs to the work and at what point it has to be tightened again.
The sculpture will next be shown in spring, together with two works on paper from the same group.
