Verena Schöttmer:
- What connects you to the foundation?
I was a fellow of the foundation in 2016/17 and really enjoyed the seasons at the mill pond. It was one of my best years, away from the city and free of obligations. A small cosmos of living and working at my own pace that bore a lot of fruit. Sunrise on the water and plenty of forest. It was very productive and romantic at the same time. A year and a half later I moved back into one of the foundation’s studios and I have stayed ever since. So I live in the city and work in the country – a perfect combination for me.
- How did the work
“Ich will bleiben, Du willst gehen”
(from the collection)
come about? It is one of my “couples”, each made of a ceramic piece and a readymade. Together with the title they allude to codes or phrases of social structures and relationships. I also have a weakness for handbags. I think it started out as a test and then became a work.
- What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am continuing the idea of my series Ghostwritings (2017–ongoing). The Ghostwritings were made with bleach on denim. Now I am making drawings with bleach on blue velvet. While the Ghostwritings on denim have a rather poppy attitude, the Blue Velvet drawings are more like looking into a dark curtain in which something seems to float – floating furniture, for example. I was thinking of the old photographs of Eusapia Paladino, who made furniture float in her séances, always with curtains in the background.
